I worked on a project in Malaysia, where I was the lead mechanical engineer overseeing the revamp of a refinery. I was great, you were on site and could see things being built as the project developed.

I was project managing a pump and motor installation and everything kept going wrong! We had piping issues, foundation issues, mechanical issues, electrical issues, and lots of bad weather. On top of that, I was juggling two jobs at the same time and working for a new manager. Eventually I got the project to a point where it was passed to a new engineer (so I didn’t have to do two jobs) and the pump is up and running now. I learned a lot about engineering skills like pipefitting and project management, but also some important soft skill lessons about the criticality of asking for help, overcommunicating, and protecting from burnout.
